Dates
September 07, 2012 - September 09, 2012 - CONFIRMED!
Description: The Annual Roots & Heritage Festival hosts events throughout the month of September and consist of a wide variety of entertaining and culturally enriching activities.

Past events have included art exhibits, literary readings, midnight basketball, a golf tournament, film presentations, childrens programming, theater, a comedy night, a health fair and a fresh food marketplace, a nationally renowned speaker, and our popular three-day street festival.

Since its origins in 1989 as a small neighborhood street fair, the Roots & Heritage Festival has
grown into a major, highly popular cultural event attracting thousands of festivalgoers in the bluegrass and beyond.

The colorful pageantry of the festival, combined with its high quality offerings of cultural and educational programs, has repeatedly earned its recognition as one of the Top Twenty Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society and one of the Top Ten Festivals by the Kentucky Tourism Council.

As the centerpiece of the Roots & Heritage Festival, the street festival recaptures the powerful spirit of Lexingtons historical African American culture. Set along historic Elm Tree Lane, the three-day street festival kicks off with an energetic parade and continues throughout the afternoon and evening. With its fascinating African Marketplace, childrens programs, and high quality entertainment, the street festival presents the best in African American cultural expression in Kentucky.
